Pacing the floor in the living room gave Wade little comfort. What he really wanted to do was go back into that bedroom and take all Sandy was offering and then some. He adjusted his clothing to try to take some of the pressure off his manhood but quickly decided it didn’t matter what he wore or didn’t wear. As long as that woman was in the house and needed his help, he wasn’t going to be able to relax. Period.

Without considering how late it was, he picked up the telephone and punched in his brother’s number. Art answered on the fifth ring, his “Hello” little more than a mumble.

“It’s me, Wade.”

“Jeez, Wade, it’s 3:00 a.m.! What’s wrong? You drunk?”

“Not yet.”

“Is there a chance? Because if there is, I’m not coming down to city hall to bail you out again. I thought you were through with all that nonsense now that Sandy’s gone.”

“I was.” He rubbed his bloodshot eyes. “I am. I haven’t had a drink for two years.”

“Then what’s the matter?”

“Sandy’s back.” He heard shuffling in the background as his younger brother sat up in bed.

“She’s what?”

“You heard me. She showed up here yesterday with some kind of head injury.”

“Well, get rid of her, man.”

“I can’t.” Wade took a deep breath and sighed. “She thinks we’re still married.”

“Yeah, right.”

“No, she does. It’s weird. I didn’t believe it, either, till I took her to a doctor. He says she’ll regain her memory of the present as soon as the swelling in her head goes down.”

“And in the meantime?” Art asked.

Wade cursed. “In the meantime, I’m running around with a permanent bulge in my pants and she’s acting like she’d love to get me into the sack.”

“It could be worse,” Art countered with a snide chuckle. “It could be the other way around.”

“Oh, it is,” Wade said. “I’d love to take her up on one of her offers. The trouble is, I’m having a devil of a time keeping in mind the reason I divorced her in the first place.”

“Yeah, well, I never did understand the sordid details of that myself,” the younger man said. “Are you sure it was all her fault?”

Hardening his heart, Wade said, “Hell, yes,” evident anger emphasizing his words.

“Okay, okay. You don’t have to snap at me. I’m on your side, remember?” Art waited in silence for a few long seconds. “So why are you calling me in the middle of the night?”

“Damned if I know. I just needed someone to talk to, I guess.”

“Look, bro, this isn’t one of those 900 numbers where you get to unburden your soul for three or four dollars a minute. Get real. If you expect me to keep the print shop running well while you loaf, I’m going to have to get some sleep. ¿Comprende?”

Wade scowled at the telephone as if Art were sitting there in its place. “Yeah, I get it. Sounds like you’re seeing Maria again.”

“Just because I slipped into Spanish?” He chuckled. “If you must know, she and I are getting pretty serious.
